Technology and generational needs to shape future workplaces

Workplace technology and shifting generational expectations will play a key role in defining office environments in 2025, according to Envoy’s newly released 2025 Workplace Predictions report.

The study, based on responses from nearly 500 executives across IT, HR, facilities, and workplace management, highlights emerging trends and innovations that will impact the future of work.

Larry Gadea, Founder and CEO of Envoy, stated that businesses are moving beyond speculation and taking action to reshape their workplaces.

“Forward-thinking companies are reimagining their spaces, harnessing technology, and aligning with evolving employee needs,” he said.

The report outlines three key areas expected to influence workplace strategies in the coming year: the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, generational differences in workplace expectations and the impact of office design on employee motivation.

AI and Automation to Transform Workplaces

AI and automation are expected to drive major changes in office operations. The report found that 76 percent of employees predict AI and machine learning will significantly impact workplaces in 2025. Additionally, 84 percent believe AI-powered tools improve productivity by optimising workflows and supporting decision-making.

Hybrid work is also evolving, with 60 percent of organisations prioritising immersive technologies for virtual and in-person collaboration. Gen Z employees are particularly focused on tech-enabled spaces that enhance teamwork and connection.

However, the shift towards automation presents challenges for some businesses. The report highlights that 47 percent of organisations struggle to adapt to new workplace technologies. The financial impact of outdated systems is significant, with companies losing up to 30 percent of their revenue due to manual operations.

Generational Differences in Workplace Expectations

The report highlights how different generations prioritise workplace flexibility, autonomy and technology integration. Gen Z employees (73%) believe increased demand for flexibility and remote work will shape workplace culture and policies. Millennials (66%) value autonomy and hybrid work arrangements, while 60 percent of Gen X employees and 69 percent of Boomers want technology to improve hybrid work experiences.

Despite these differences, 63 percent of employees across all age groups agree that employee well-being and satisfaction are key metrics for workplace success. Workplace flexibility remains a priority for 66 percent of respondents.

Office Design and Employee Engagement

Office design is becoming a significant factor in employee motivation. The report found that 51 percent of Gen Z employees consider office comfort and design important reasons to return to in-person work. Many prefer immersive, tech-enabled environments and quiet spaces for focus and relaxation.

Collaboration is another driving factor, with 57 percent of employees prioritising meaningful team engagement as a reason to work in the office. Office layout and design also play a role in performance, with 92 percent of respondents agreeing that improved workplace design enhances long-term productivity.
